Fruit, Vegetables & Native Trees

E:

Kylerhea Crofts Market Garden and Nursery is situated off the beaten track in the south of Skye. Established in 1992 John and Beryl Bannister grow a range of utility produce including fruit, vegetables and native broadleaf trees from seed.

Early polytunnel production of a wide variety of vegetable and tomato transplants kicks off their growing season alongside early and mid-season production of a wide variety of salad, vegetables and strawberries.

Native broadleaf trees are grown from seed gathered from within there own woodland and elsewhere in south Skye. Small and larger quantities (10’s, 100’s and 1000’s), dependant on the annual availability of seed, of native species and occasionally Holly, Juniper and some Scots Pine may also be available.

Enquiries on availability of trees (species/quantities) should be made in the planning stage, well in advance of intended planting, to avoid disappointment.

Vegetables, Soft Fruit and Plants

Les Brown is a former curator of the Reptile House at Glasgow Zoo. After a long career at the Zoo he decided to change direction and bought a croft in Ballantrushal, Lewis. Horticulture is now his passion. Les grows a wide selection of annuals and perennials, and fruit and veg. He has two polytunnels and a fruit cage, and a further polytunnel waiting to go up for more strawberries and early perennials next year.He supplies the Stornoway Farmer’s Market , and has a busy self-service trade at the van he keeps in his drive. With his business in its early stages, Les says he sees it as having enormous potential with a keen market of buyers seeking garden plants and fresh produce.

Ruraidh lives on his family croft in Balmacara. He supplements his pocket money by selling eggs from his Black Rock hens.Although he has been selling eggs for the past two years he has recently expanded his business by investing in some more hens. Ruraidh says I have regular customer’s and as the demand for eggs increases I have been buying more hens. My Dad is complaining that we don’t have enough eggs for the house.

Info: Fiona and Richard to Skye 6 years ago from Hampshire with their Private Rescue Centre for animals.  They now have 5 Highland Cattle, 2 llamas, 15 goats, 14sheep and many hens, geese, ducks, quails and a Peacock and Peahen.  They sell the eggs from the farm gate to help pay for the feed costs for these animals.  The hens are fed layer pellets, they are also given in the morning with cooked rice, spaghetti and Weetabix.  During the day the hens can go inside the barn where they can listen to the Radio 2, which helps to keep them calm and laid back.  The hens get kept inside overnight to keep them safe from the foxes.

Info: The well established flock of pedigree Hebridean Sheep are home bred and they graze on the in-by croft and on the machair, on natural herbage.  The sheep are hand sheared and the fleeces are prepared on the croft before being sent to the New Lanark Mills for spinning into yarn.  This is use for knitting and weaving yarns.  The yarn is naturally coloured varying in colour depending on the sheep’s age.  Produce is sold locally on the island, the vegetables can also be purchased through local shops.
